Sorry for my week-long absences lately! Urinetown opens TOMORROW (eeeeeeeeek!!!) so I've been going crazy with last minute runs, costume changes, and makeup choices! It should be good, wish us luck!

Better late than never.

I've been trying to get this post up for a week, easy. This are gettin' crazy around these parts, what with my show opening in 8 days (ah!) and all. Lots of lines, songs, and dances to perfect!

In anycase, this outfit is comfortable and cute, perfect to go from work all day to rehearsal all night. In fact, I'm wearing it's black-dress-burgundy-tights-same-scarf cousin as we speak.

Do you love my new Steve Madden Graanie boots, a Christmas present from the boyfriend, as much as I do?! I've been wearing them with everything, from skirts and dresses to jeans and leggings. They're the best way to toughen up a feminine outfit in my opinion. And aren't they the most perfect footwear for one Ms. Penelope Pennywise?? Ah, the beauty of multitasking.

Hairspiration

Inspired by Maegan to have some fun with my hair last night: Bantu knots ensued.

I have such schizophrenic hair - I get great curls and ringlets in the summer because of the humidity, but in the winter I'm lucky if I can coax out a wave! I love this no-heat method of curling - it's simple, no fuss, and the resulting curls are so natural looking. I didn't even use damp hair for this, I twisted up my day old, completely dry hair into these buns and got this result!

January Birchbox

My very first Birchbox arrived!

Of my five samples, I'm most excited about the stila Smudge Stick eyeliner and Zoya nail polish. I got the eyeliner in a gorgeous shade of deep, shimmery plum, and Zoya Megan, a pretty lavender. The Archipelago soap smells fantastic as well, though the Juicy fragrance is a little too floral for my taste - florals make me automatically think 'grandma'. I haven't tasted the wichcraft sample yet, though I bet it's yummy.

For 10 buckaroos a month I think it's really hard to go wrong with the Birchbox. The eyeliner alone paid for itself doubly - it retails at $20 bucks and I know it's a product I'll use. Can't wait to see what next month's box brings!

Serpentine

I took these outfit pics over a span of about 10 minutes, and just look how much the light changed in that short span of time! I'm grateful for the beautiful sunshine we've had here for the last day or two, but man is it cold! I was hoping we'd keep a balmy 45 degrees around all winter, but no such luck.

This winter has been all about the sweaters for me. My mom gifted me some great stuff from TJ Maxx for Christmas, and though it didn't all fit, I'm not complaining because I picked up this awesome belted sweater with my store credit. I love the variation of the brown hues with the black, and also love how the solid black sleeves give it the look of a short sleeved sweater over a long sleeved shirt.

I was in the mood for some texture so instead of plain black leggings or jeans, I decided to pair the sweater with these flippin' awesome snake print leggings I picked up at Target a few weeks back. I love these so much! They're subtle enough that it just looks like a slight metallic sheen from far away, but up close you can really see the fantastic snake skin print.

Is there a staple you just can't stop wearing this winter? Boots? Hats?

Menswear Monday - Cashmere and Corduroy

Happy New Year everyone! I thought I'd kick off the year right with the second installment of 'Menswear Monday' featuring the musings and stylings of Peter! I hope you enjoy his post - feel free to comment or email us with any of your (or your man's) menswear questions!

The cardigan - it's always been a favorite in menswear, but one I rarely attempt to pull it off. As Mitch from "A Streetcar Named Desire" said, "...it don't look neat on me. A man with a heavy build has got to be careful of what he puts on so he don't look too clumsy." 

And isn't that the truth. Notwithstanding the accusatory jokes of pulling out Werther's Originals out of your sweater pockets, discussing diabetes testing supplies for Liberty Medical, or a slew of other 'old man' puns, the man cardigan, or "mardigan" can look young and hip for the stockier gentleman if done right. 

Avoiding solid colors, I chose a two-toned cardigan of light brown with a darker brown trim. Knowing the power of a good blazer, I teamed it up with a roomy but slimming cordoroy number that framed the sweater and my entire outfit. 

To avoid the possibility of looking like a solid mass of turd brown, I added a hint of holiday color. The red plaid shirt popped through the creamy browns and accentuated the look nicely. Topped off with a pair of brown cap toe oxfords and a go-to pair of straight fit indigo jeans, and the outfit is complete. 

But, what is winter without the proper head gear? Those cold nights require a bit of cloth on your noggin to make sure you don't catch a bug. The fedora is an accessory that few men dare to wear outside of a costume or ironic setting. When tastefully selected, it can be the difference between a normal outfit and a perfect one. One should venture out of their comfort zone when adding superfluous accessories to your wardrobe - Don't just get a functional hat for those winter nights, get one that makes a statement.
